Basquevolt is a battery technology company specialised in electrolyte development for Li-Metal battery technologies, founded in June 2022 as a spinout of CIC energiGUNE, one of Europe's leading energy storage research centres. We develop and commercialise a proprietary hybrid-polymer electrolyte for Gen-4 lithium-metal batteries, targeting automotive, aerospace, heavy-load and stationary storage applications.
We are headquartered at the Parque Tecnológico de Álava in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain, home to our Innovation Centre, R&D laboratories and sample pilot production line.
We have delivered sample cells to different automotive OEM and aerospace clients, hold active Joint Development Agreements with Renault Group and other automotive players, and are preparing for the scale-up of our proprietary electrolyte production.
We work with partners across different levels of the value chain. At the OEM and end-user level, we have publicly announced an active Joint Development Agreement with Renault Group / Ampere and hold active agreements with additional automotive, aviation and heavy-duty players. We also partner with established Gen-3 gigafactory operators and cell manufacturers seeking to upgrade their infrastructure to our Gen-4 technology, supplying our electrolyte as a drop-in component compatible with approximately 90% of their existing capital equipment.
Three things set us apart: the speed at which we reached OEM-grade sample cells, our drop-in compatibility with existing Li-ion gigafactory infrastructure, and a more capital-efficient business model focused on electrolyte supply and technology licensing rather than building complete cells at scale.
Gen-4 Li-metal batteries replace the conventional graphite anode found in today's lithium-ion cells with an ultra-thin lithium-metal anode. This architectural change, enabled by a new generation of electrolyte technology, unlocks step-change improvements in energy density, safety and fast-charge performance, while remaining compatible with established cell manufacturing processes.
Basquevolt has developed a proprietary electrolyte formulation specifically engineered to work with lithium-metal anodes. It is present in both the separator and the cathode of our cell architecture, protected by 19+ family patents, and validated with both NMC and LFP cathode chemistries. Critically, it is processable using standard Li-ion manufacturing, making it the most manufacturable advanced electrolyte pathway available today.
Oxide and sulfide electrolytes offer strong ionic conductivity but present significant manufacturability challenges: expensive materials, processes incompatible with existing Li-ion infrastructure, and, in the case of sulfides, air and moisture instability requiring costly dry-room conditions. Polymer electrolytes are the most scalable pathway, with the lowest CAPEX requirement and the clearest route to gigafactory-scale production.
The range of an electric vehicle is directly determined by the energy density of its battery pack. Basquevolt's electrolyte technology enables Li-metal cells that achieve approximately double the gravimetric and volumetric energy density of best-in-class Gen-3 lithium-ion. Beyond range, the same technology enables safer and lighter battery packs, reducing overall vehicle weight and improving efficiency across the full drive cycle.
In conventional lithium-ion batteries, higher energy density increases thermal runaway risk because more energy is stored adjacent to a flammable electrolyte. Basquevolt's electrolyte formulation is engineered to remain stable with lithium-metal anodes under high-stress operating conditions, enabling non-flammable, non-combustible cell chemistry without sacrificing performance. Safety and energy density are no longer in tension.
Our sample cells achieve 402 Wh/kg specific energy density for NMC aerospace applications (vs. 200-300 Wh/kg for best-in-class Li-ion reference cells) and a safety rating below HL4 for automotive qualification. LFP variants achieve 302 Wh/kg, confirmed as class-leading globally for Li-metal LFP.
The battery market is large enough and diverse enough that no single technology will serve every application. Sodium-ion, for example, is a credible and cost-competitive chemistry for short-range urban mobility and stationary storage where energy density is less critical. Next-generation lithium-ion, including silicon-anode variants, will continue to improve and retain relevance in cost-sensitive segments. We do not view these as threats: different chemistries will find their natural fit across different performance, cost and application profiles. Where Basquevolt focuses is on the applications that demand the highest energy density, the strongest safety profile and the longest cycle life, segments where Li-metal electrolyte technology has a durable and structural advantage over all current alternatives.
Our technology is designed as a drop-in solution, compatible with approximately 90% of existing Li-ion capital equipment. The cathode line is 100% compatible, whereas the bought-in lithium metal anode enables frees up manufacturing capability. The assembly line is hugely compatible with Gen3. All in all, streamlining the process and reducing Capex needs. This is a fundamental commercial advantage: the transition to Gen-4 Li-metal is an upgrade to existing infrastructure, not a replacement of it.
Basquevolt's electrolyte is cathode-agnostic, validated with both NMC and LFP chemistries. This gives cell manufacturers and OEMs flexibility to choose the cathode that best fits their cost, performance and supply chain requirements.
Yes. Basquevolt produces Li-metal pouch cells powered by our proprietary electrolyte technology, currently at 5Ah and 80 Ah formats. These cells serve two purposes: direct supply to aerospace and high-performance applications, and delivery to automotive, heavy-duty and other industrial customers for development and qualification purposes.
